Hi, everybody. This is Adriana Baer, the host of I'm Into This Place, your local podcast about arts and culture in Southwest Washington. Today is Saturday, August 8th, and it is day two of the Vancouver Arts and Music Festival. If I saw you yesterday at the festival, thank you so much for stopping by our booth. I hope you'll come and check out what we're up to today as well. Here is my hot take on what not to miss today, day two of the festival, and I'm kicking it off by talking about some workshops and interactive displays. You'll definitely wanna go by the Native and Indigenous Marketplace booth. This is sponsored by Christine Richardson with The Art Centered. She is the one who runs the Arts Hub And she's got a booth featuring local Native and Indigenous artists and vendors. They're making things with a variety of mediums, including 2D and 3D fiber art, jewelry, wood, metal, ceramics, modern and traditional methods, all here in this one booth. It's really beautiful, so definitely go and take a look. You can paint your own canvas with Artstra today. You can make a puppet with Pegasus Puppet Theater, and one of my favorites every year is the glassblowing demonstration with Firehouse Glass. So make sure to check out some of those workshops and interactive exhibits.
At 10:00 AM on the Dance Stage, we've got the Vietnamese Community of Clark County performing, followed by Vancouver Ballet Folklórico, also
on the Dance Stage, at 11:00 AM. At noon we've got Sarada Kala Nilayam, a performing arts organization dedicated to the South Indian Bharatanatyam and Nattuvanngam dance. That's again on the dance stage. Lots of cool dance going on today.
At 1:00, I recommend going over to the Acoustic Stage to check out local favorites Introducing the Machine. This is a dynamic duo of two incredible ladies who I met last year at the festival and have become a secret fan of.
At 2:00 PM, go back over to the music stage where you'll find Animala, a Pacific Northwest based exotica quintet who have recaptured the evocative sounds of mid-century tiki lounges. Excuse me, this is so fun. Like the exotica pioneers before them, they blend the tropical stylings of Polynesian music with cocktail jazz and unidentifiable bird calls. Back on the dance stage, Anavai O Te Ora, southwest Washington's only pupu 'ōri Tahitian dance group. Check 'em out Tonight, we have the VSO Youth Virtuosi Symphony. This is a group of high school students, the best in the area, handpicked by their music teachers to practice for a very long time for this special 5:30 PM concert. The concert will feature Julian Schwarz, Gerard Schwarz, and Ken Selden, some of our world-famous musicians that are here this week, and they are performing a couple of fantastic pieces, including some Bizet, a Hungarian Rhapsody, and the Toreadors from Carmen, which we all like to sing along to.
At 7:00, following the Vancouver Youth Virtuosi, will be the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra again, tonight featuring Pinchas Zukerman and Gerard Schwarz. And at intermission, Brandee Parisi from All Classical and the Youth Virtuosi conductor will sit together for a conversation called Why Youth Orchestras Matter. And then after all is said and done, when we're tired and dusty, but super happy from our day of listening to music and watching dance, you can head on up to Ronald Records right up Main Street for the after hours party. It's an all-ages concert featuring Naselrod and Vague Fugue. Whew, it's gonna be a big day. I have a booth right in the center of the park just to the west of the main stage. I'll be there saying hi to all of you, collecting your entries to our raffle, and asking for your opinions on our Audience Choice Awards for who we're going to interview next season.
